‘Sunflowers’ represents friendship and gratitude. Van Gough hung two of the paintings in the room of his friend, Paul Gauguin, who came to live with him in the yellow house. Gauguin was so impressed by the sunflowers that he asked Van Gough if he could keep one of the paintings, which he reluctantly accepted.
